How to activate a Joker Card
Cards bought at a Canadian till are usually live when you walk out. Virtual cards and online registration work differently. Here is how to tell which you have.
1. Which kind of card do you have?
“Joker Card” covers more than one product, and the activation answer differs for each.

2. Cards bought in a Canadian store
A Joker card sits inert on the rack. Scanning it at the till and paying is what loads it — which is also why you cannot simply pick one up and walk out with a working card. By the time you have your receipt, it is live.
The receipt is the only document tying you to that card. If the till failed to complete activation, if the balance reads zero, or if the card turns out to have been tampered with, that is what customer service needs. Photograph it — thermal paper fades within months.
Before leaving the store, inspect the packaging: a scratched security panel, a torn or re-glued backing, or a card loose in its holder all suggest tampering. Hand it back and pick another. Our scam guide explains how card-rack tampering works.
3. Activating a card yourself
For cards that did not come from a store till — and for the Joker Virtual Mastercard — activation is a short self-service process through the official Joker channels printed on your card materials.
- Open the official Joker site. Type the address from your card or packaging into your browser. Look for the activation option rather than the balance lookup.
- Enter the card details exactly as printed.
- Supply any activation code included with the packaging or carrier.
- Complete activation. For a Virtual Mastercard, this step is what reveals the 16-digit number, expiry date and security code you will use at checkout.
- Check the balance. Seeing the full loaded amount confirms it worked.

4. Register a billing address before shopping online
This is the step people skip, and it causes more declines than any activation problem. Online checkouts run an Address Verification Service check comparing the billing postal code you type against the postal code registered to the card. A freshly activated card has no address on file, so the check has nothing to match and the payment is refused — even with plenty of money available.
Register your own name and home postal code against the card, then use exactly those details as the billing address at every online checkout. The shipping address can be anything; only the billing address is checked.
5. When activation fails
“Card cannot be activated”
Check the digits, then the expiry. If both are right the card may already be active — try a balance check instead. If that also fails, phone support with your receipt.
Activated but the balance reads zero
Wait an hour and check again, as store activations occasionally lag. If it is still zero, call support with the receipt showing the load amount. Without the receipt this is very hard to resolve.
The activation details are missing or unreadable
Do not guess. Phone support, who can work from the 16-digit number and your purchase details.
The card was tampered with before you bought it
Treat it as compromised. Keep everything — card, packaging and receipt — tell the store, and call support. See avoiding prepaid card scams.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Joker Card bought in a Canadian store need activating?
Normally the cashier activates it as part of the sale, which is why the till prints an activation amount on your receipt. Keep that receipt — it is your proof of the load if anything goes wrong.
How long does activation take?
Store activation is usually instant but can take up to an hour to appear in the balance system. Self-service activation online is normally live within a few minutes.
What do I need to activate a card?
The 16-digit card number, the expiry date and the security code, and for some cards the activation details on the packaging or carrier. You do not need a bank account or a credit check.
Can I use the card straight after activating it?
For in-store purchases, yes. For online shopping you should also register a billing address and postal code against the card, or address verification at checkout will refuse it.
My card will not activate — what now?
Call the customer service number on your card with your purchase receipt in hand. Most often the till did not complete the activation, and the receipt is what lets support correct it.
